Efficiently filtering selected images across various software and file management systems can significantly streamline your workflow. Hereโ€™s a comprehensive guide on how to filter image selections in Lightroom Classic, Capture One, Photo Mechanic, macOS Finder, and Windows Explorer using PIKD.

Important Note on File Naming for Capture One Exports

When exporting selections to Capture One, empty spaces in file names can cause issues because they are used to separate multiple file names in the filtering process. To avoid errors, it's best to use underscores (_) or hyphens (-) instead of spaces.

โœ… Recommended Naming Convention:

๐Ÿ“‚ shoot-one-motiv-2-29955.RAW (โœ” Works)

โŒ shoot one motiv 2 29955.RAW (โœ– May cause issues)

Solutions:

  1. Rename files before uploading to PIKD to ensure compatibility.

  2. Use PIKDโ€™s batch rename feature to fix file names after upload before exporting to Capture One.

  3. Ensure the same naming convention is used in both PIKD and Capture One for a smooth workflow.

By following these best practices, you can avoid filtering errors and streamline your selection process in Capture One. ๐Ÿš€

1. Copying the Filter Text from PIKD

Before proceeding in your chosen application, start by copying the list of filenames from PIKD:

  • Apply a filter to view the selection.

  • Click on the "Export Selection" icon next to the filter reset button.

  • Choose the appropriate filter text format for your application (e.g., Lightroom, Capture One, Finder/Explorer) and copy it to your clipboard.

2. Filtering Images in Lightroom Classic

Note: Lightroom 7 and later have no "AND" search only "OR" search, there fore searching and filtering for multiple filenames will only work in Lightroom Classic.

  • Open the Library module and navigate to the folder with your shoot.

  • Select "Show Filter Bar" from "View" or Press the "\" key to display the filter bar at the top.

  • Select the "Text" filter.

  • Set the criteria to "Filename" and "Contains".

  • Paste the copied filenames into the search field.

Lightroom will now only display your selected images. You can save these as a collection or tag them with ratings, colors, or keywords for easier workflow management.

3. Filtering Images in Capture One

There are multiple ways to filter your selections in Capture One:

Option 1: Browser Search

  • Press Cmd + F (Mac) / Ctrl + F (Windows) to open the browser search.

  • Paste the copied filenames into the search field.

Option 2: Filters Tool

  • Open the Filters tool from the toolbar.

  • Paste the copied filenames into the search field.

Option 3: Select by Filename List

  • Go to Select > Select By > Filename List in the menu.

  • Paste the copied filenames into the search field.

  • Choose "Space" as the delimiter and check "Ignore File Extension".

  • Click OK.

Capture One will now highlight only the selected images, which you can save as a collection or organize further.

4. Filtering Images in Photo Mechanic

  • Open your project folder in Photo Mechanic.

  • Press Cmd + F (Mac) / Ctrl + F (Windows) to open the search dialog or select from "Edit" and "Find" from the top menu bar.

  • Paste the copied filenames into the search field.

  • Set the search options to:

    • Find: Any of the words

    • In: All items

    • Searching: Filenames

  • Click Find.

Photo Mechanic will now filter and select all images from your PIKD selection, allowing you to proceed with editing or export.

5. Filtering Files in macOS Finder or Windows Explorer

  • Open the folder containing your images.

  • Click into the search bar at the top.

  • Paste the copied filenames into the search field.

Your system will now display only the files from your selection.

Note: In Windows Explorer, the search field has a character limit of 259 characters. If your filename list exceeds this limit, consider filtering in smaller batches.
